Stop It Now! Ph.D. Scholarship Awarded – research to focus on youth involvement and young men
The Stop It Now! research partnership with the Centre for Applied Childhood Studies, University of Huddersfield (UK) has achieved its first goal: the establishment and awarding of the joint Stop It Now! PhD scholarship for the Study of the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse.
After global marketing and two rounds of applications, Rebecca Wasinski, the campaign manager of Stop It Now! Wales was awarded the scholarship from among a pool of high quality applications. The Stop It Now! Wales campaign is part of Stop it Now! UK & Ireland, our independent sister organization.
Rebecca plans to research youth perspectives of child sexual abuse prevention, with a focus on youth involvement, especially young men.
Jim Hafner of Stop It Now! served on the team that reviewed research applications. This led to an additional, separate PhD scholarship for research that will examine online networks of individuals involved in child sexual exploitation. Jim serves on Rebecca’s doctoral supervision team and participated in her April committee meeting on the University of Huddersfield campus.
This recent UK visit also included work on joint planning and meetings with Centre staff, researchers and students. The Stop It Now! public health approach to preventing child sexual abuse was introduced to the Social Work School at a seminar given by Rebecca, Jim and Stop it Now! England Campaign Manager, Liz Maslen. The six-day trip included a visit with colleagues at Stop it Now! UK & Ireland at the Lucy Faithfull Foundation offices outside of Birmingham.
