Stop it Now! UK & Ireland Launches Parents Protect Website

Stop it Now! UK & Ireland, our sister organization, has just launched a new website with the support of the United Kingdom (UK) Home Office, the lead government agency responsible for immigration, drug policy, crime, counter-terrorism and police. Parents Protect (  is a new resource to help parents and carers protect their children from sexual abuse.

For more information, please see the Press Release - "Protecting Children, Empowering Communities."

The Parents Protect website was launched as more police force areas go live with the Child Sex Offender Disclosure Scheme.  The UK Home Office is expanding this program, which allows members of the public (e.g., a parent, grandparent, neighbor or friend) to ask local law enforcement to check whether a specific person who has contact with their children pose a risk. If the individuals have convictions for sexual offenses against children or pose a risk of causing serious harm to the child or children concerned, the police can choose to disclose that information to the applying parent or carer. An evaluation of the initial pilot scheme (PDF) conducted in four police force areas is available on the Home Office website.

The UK does not have a public sex offender registryi. Instead, the UK 'Violent and Sex Offender Register’ allows government authorities to keep track of the residence and activities of sex offenders, including those who have completed criminal sentences. Agencies such as police and probation work together and with others to manage and monitor known offenders upon release from prison or sentencing at court. For information about this process, read more about the Multi Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA).
