About Stop It Now! Georgia

Program Overview

Stop It Now! Georgia is a program of Prevent Child Abuse (PCA) Georgia.  Stop It Now! Georgia was developed through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  PCA Georgia is one of several organizations nationally to implement this innovative prevention model in partnership with Stop It Now!.

PCA Georgia, together with communities throughout the state, is challenged to implement strategies aimed at shifting the burden of prevention and protection of children to adults and communities who are responsible for their safety.  Only adults are capable of preventing the perpetration of child sexual abuse and must be encouraged to address child sexual abuse before a child is harmed. Stop It Now! Georgia provides the framework for the public awareness and education that makes this shifting of accountability possible.

Prevalence of Child Sexual Abuse

  • 88% of children who are sexually abused never disclose their abuse when they are still children. This means that most of our information about reported cases is limited to those children (12%) who are able to tell an adult and make a report.
  • Knowing that most children do not report sexual abuse, in Georgia in 2005, 5,537 cases of child sexual abuse were reported. 1,957 were substantiated.
  • Of these cases, 66% of child sexual abuse cases in Georgia involved family and extended family members, and 28% were well-known to the victim and family.
  • 27% were the child's birth parents.
